PrimaLoft Bio fibers biodegrade by hydrodegradation
August 19, 2021

Associate Editor at Nonwovens Industry
A more sustainable alternative to mixing bonding fibers with natural fibers has been sought out – and achieved. Fiberpartner is now offering a commercial biodegradable* solution using PrimaLoft Bio technology. These fibers are based on core/sheath in 100% PET and available in 2 and 4 den–cut lengths from 32 mm to 105 mm. PrimaLoft Bio fibers biodegrade* by hydrodegradation only, can be chemically recycled, and are designed to return to nature at the end of their life cycle. Only natural elements are left in their wake, including biomass, carbon dioxide, water and methane. “We are happy that accelerated tests from the independent lab are showing fast biodegradability* properties. Many customer production trials have confirmed excellent fiber performance when blending with other PrimaLoft Bio or natural fibers. This demonstrates that we have developed biodegradable*, low-melting fibers without compromising on performance. This helps reduce the number of microplastics in our landfills, oceans, and waterways – an essential goal of ours,” says Jevgeni Pärg from Fiberpartner. In addition to bico fibers, other PET fibers have been tested and are now commercially available, including those for wipes, ADL, filtration, acoustics, as well as different types of nonwovens. Fiberpartner is also excited to be exhibiting at the upcoming INDEX nonwovens exhibition in Geneva. Fiberpartner is a global license partner for Primaloft, developing and bringing PrimaLoft Bio fibers for nonwovens to the market. *93.8% biodegradation in 646 days under ASTM D5511 conditions (accelerated landfill environment); 74.3% biodegradation in 889 days under ASTM D6691 conditions (accelerated marine/ocean environment). The stated rate and extent of degradation do not mean that the product will continue to degrade.
